Pre-Surgical Care

Physical therapy may be indicated before surgery to maximize joint motion and overall strength and endurance that will prepare for a successful postoperative recovery.

Our pre-surgical treatment may focus on the following:

  • Mentally prepare for surgery
  • Reduce pain and inflammation
  • Restore range of motion
  • Improving muscular control of the injured joint
  • Normalizing movement patterns prior to your surgery
  • Improved overall well-being and fitness
  • Gain a good understanding of the plan of care immediately after surgery

Post-Surgical Care

Post-operatively, physical therapy will begin as soon as it is recommended by the surgeon. Treatment may start anywhere from a few hours to a few days after surgery and in some cases there may be a period of immobilization following surgery. The Training Room’s physical therapist and patient will work together to establish functional goals related to resuming normal activities of daily living as well as preventing an injury from recurring. Our therapist will then design a treatment program tailored specific to the individual patient’s needs and abilities, work and sports. Treatment goals will include minimizing the adverse effects of the surgery such as pain, swelling, atrophy and loss of mobility. Our therapy will following distinct phases of rehabilitation that progress the patient safely through the recovery process. Once appropriate, our physical therapists will further assess the entire body to determine any underlying issues that may have contributed to the injury. Our goal is restore function beyond the patient’s previous level to ensure a safe return to full activity with reduced likelihood of reinjury.
